Description of the fresh water fishery
The fresh water fisheries in Canada are located in the Great lakes, Lake Winnipeg, Great Slave Lake as well as around 600 smaller lakes. Lake Erie is the largest producer in the fresh water fishery, the great lakes have the most important fresh water fishery. The major fish species caught in these lakes are trout, pickerel, perch and whitefish. The fresh water fisheries are not as important to the Canadian Economy compared to the fisheries in the east or west coast. There is a small amount of people involved in this fishery, but this fishery is very important to the areas where it takes place. In northern Canada, 90% of people involved in commercial fishing are aboriginal. Fish make up a large part of a person’s diet and provide cash income where jobs are scarce.
